The Cut of a Man

1. Colonel Thomas, 1975
Have instructed First Lieutenant O'Neill that "for crying out loud" is not an appropriate way to address a superior officer.

2. Colonel Michaels, 1982
Captain O'Neill is an excellent candidate for the rank of Major. Frankly, sirs, he reminds me of myself. I mean that to be a good thing.

3. General West, 1995
He still stands like the soldier that left, but something cold melted away on that desert planet. Perhaps that's for the best.

4. General Bauer, 2000
Col. Jack O'Neill is the most insubordinate officer I've ever had in a command. That he's ascended this far is beyond reason.

5. General Hammond, 2003
It has been an honor to serve with him. He is an exemplary officer, a good friend, and the first person I would trust with the continued operation of Stargate Command.

Thank you! I had fun playing with all the different personalities in this.

And yes, Bauer is evil.

I missed commenting on these in the comm, and they're wonderful. Such a mix, and yeah, they definitely say as much about the men adding to the file as they do about the man whose file it is. Neat.

I had a lot of fun coming up with lines that speak both to Jack and to the characters delivering the lines.

(horribly late response, horribly late.)

Heee. Very cool. I absolutely adore 5 things. It's amazing how much can be said with so little...

Loved this, even if they did give me flashbacks of the days when I had to proof read OERs (Officer Evaluation Reports) as a battalion S-1 clerk. :-p

Oh, are they "correct"? I've never read anything like an officer evaluation and five things prompts make me lazy so I didn't do my normal amounts of research. It would please me greatly if they were close to being accurate. ;)

Besides all of the standard bullet comments, there is a section for the officer's CO to put in their own recommendations and comments. Obviously subjective commentary is frowned upon, but it is done all the time, so yep, they're accurate!

If you ever decide to do a fic like this with visual additions, let me know and I can scrounge up a file of an actual blank OER and send it to you.

Is the offer still good for scrounging up an OER?

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I really liked writing these and I got an interesting offer awhile ago, so perhaps I'll write another of these soon. Right now I have a ficathon obligation to fulfill, though. ;)

This was fun! I love how the comments were short and sweet, but each said something. #4 was interesting, both because it was humorous and also because it seems to show that Jack's insubordinate tendancies started (or at least ramped up) largely after coming back from Abydos. ;)

Hee. I kind of think that his insubordination did ramp up after Abydos. I always picture him as a slightly cocky soldier, a bit flippant, but someone who followed orders and respected (most of) his superior officers. Yes, there were some people he told to shove it but it was more like, "Shove it, sir." And then his son died and his whole world changed, and then it changed again and he found out how very small we are in the universe and then, well, following orders didn't seem quite so important any more. ;)

Glad you enjoyed the fic!

*nod nod That makes a lot of sense, actually. I really like that analysis of the evolution of Jack's snark. :)

Cool fic. Interesting analysis. You know, something that surprised me when I went back and watched the Stargate movie again recently (I actually didn't care for the movie that much) is how much of the Jack we know actually shows up even in the movie. I just remembered him being this stony-faced soldier, but he did some goofy, sarcastic things, too. Like, hand signals with the Abydonians (fingers around the eyes for Daniel "the geek") and such.

Even though I love Daniel and will on occasion purport to having a mind-meld with him, the character I "get" the most is Jack. His motivation and emotional-deception just make sense to me. And I love writing for him.

We definitely see the genesis of Jack in the movie. Hell, the whole dual "I have an idea" thing is so Jack & Daniel. But the pre-Abydos Jack is harder, less emotional, and missing that spark that makes him endearing. Actually, it's more specifically the pre-Abydos, post-Charlie Jack.

*sigh* I love these characters.
